The opening of your video holds more value than you probably realize
Most people scroll quickly since they are on Instagram, Facebook or YouTube. Your audience makes fast judgments while they watch their content.
During the first three seconds of your video it doesn’t just matter a lot—it determines the entire video’s success.
📌 First Impressions Happen Fast
Video creation often intimidates people. You do not need to be flawless because you serve your community as a small business owner. Your initial goal should be to deliver clear information while being authentic and attention-grabbing from the start.
During the first three seconds of your video what essential steps should you take?
🔹 1. Start with the Problem or the Promise
Begin your video by addressing a relevant issue or presenting an obvious advantage.
Instead of:
“Hi, I’m Sarah from Sarah’s Plants and More...”
Try:
“Tired of your plants dying after two weeks? Here's what you're missing.”
When viewers see this opening it grabs their attention because they recognize the material belongs to them.
🔹 2. Show Something Moving
A static talking head doesn’t always cut it. Motion naturally catches the eye.
Try:
A quick pan of your storefront
Your hands unpacking a new product
You walk into frame with high energy
You need no complex equipment but basic movement along with some thought.
🔹 3. Avoid Wasting Time on Your Logo
You’ve only got a few seconds.Let’s be honest—your viewers don’t care about your intro animation yet.
Lead with value. Save the branding for later in the video or the final frame.
🔹 4. Ask a Question That Stops the Scroll
People tend to pause their scrolling when they encounter questions because questions trigger thinking for a brief period of time which results in valuable pauses.
Examples!
“Would you trust a business with boring videos?”
“What if one video could bring in a week’s worth of customers?”
At this point viewers become interested in the solution so they will continue watching to discover the answer.
🎯 Why This Matters for Local Businesses
The people who watch your content are not marketing experts. Your community members resemble you because they exist in the same town.
During scrolling people do not ask:
“Is this a polished, professionally-produced video?”
They’re asking:
“Is this worth my time?”
Your effective opening will obtain viewer attention so you can establish trust and share your narrative to grow your business.
